Spirulina belongs to the cyanobacteria family, a group of single-celled microorganisms also known as blue-green algae. Cyanobacteria, like plants, can make energy from sunlight using a process known as photosynthesis.

Spirulina is a cyanobacteria-based biomass that humans and animals can consume. There are three species: Arthrospira platensis, A. fusiformis, and A. maxima. Arthrospira is cultivated worldwide and utilized as a nutritional supplement or entire food.
